Gonggi (공기) is a traditional Korean game most recently popularized by squidgames. Easy to learn and play. It’s kind of like jacks but without the ball, and all you need are five small pieces and a flat surface. Hand eye coordination required!
What You Need
• Gonggi pieces: Usually five small stones or plastic pieces, but you can improvise with anything similar. We recommend dice!
• Flat surface: A table, floor, or any level surface works.
How to Play
Level 1: Pick Up One at a Time
1. Toss all five pieces onto the flat surface.
2. Pick up one piece, toss it in the air, and grab another piece from the surface before catching the tossed one.
3. Repeat until you’ve picked up all the pieces.
Level 2: Pick Up Two at a Time
1. Toss the pieces back onto the surface.
2. Pick up one piece, toss it, and grab two pieces at a time before catching the tossed piece.
3. Keep going until all pieces are picked up.
Level 3: Pick Up Three, Then One
1. Toss all the pieces down again.
2. Pick up one, toss it, and grab three pieces in one go.
3. Finally, toss and pick up the last piece.
Level 4: The Backhand Catch
1. Toss all five pieces in the air.
2. Catch all five with the back of your hand.
3. Toss those again and catch them in the palm of your hand.
If you mess up at any stage, you restart at Level 1.
